Opposing college management’s decision on sending proposal for the formation of new university comprising cluster of colleges to the State Government, various student groups of DAV (PG) College staged a protest under the banner of College Bachao Sangharsh Samiti at college campus and shouted anti-management slogans on Wednesday. The protesters warned that they will intensify protest unless their demands are met.
Members of National Students’ Union of India, Akhil Bharatiya Vidhyarthi Parishad (ABVP), Students Federation of India (SFI), Aryan Group, Pattu Group and others led by college students union president Siddharth Rana assembled on the campus and demanded withdrawal of management’s decision on formation of new university. Following this protest, road users on DAV College road faced traffic congestion for around two hours.
In his address, Rana alleged that to earn profit, the college management has sent proposal to the state government for the formation of new university. The new university would lead to privatisation of education in the college. In students’ interest, the college management and the State Government should work together for making this college a Government College rather than forming new university comprising cluster of colleges.
He alleged that the management has never taken any steps for improvement and should spend funds for improvement of infrastructure in the college. NSUI member Vinit Bhatt said, “All the members of student groups should protest together against management’s decision on new university so that we can prevent this college from becoming private college.” Due to nominal college fee and tuition fee, large numbers of poor students from various parts of the state are completing their higher education from here. “We will intensify our protest across the state if management does not withdraw its decision soon," Aryan Group member Satish Pant added.
