'Cycling a pollution-free way to reduce health risks'

Published on:

Riding bicycle regularly is one of the best ways to reduce health risks.

It can protect anyone from serious diseases such as obesity, heart disease, cancer, mental illness and arthritis etc.

Apart from this, it's also the best form of transport as it saves money and is also good for the environment, says Sameer Narula founder of Sam's Cycling Club (SCC) Dehradun.

Sameer said that SCC is a group for bicycle lovers with a message of making Dehradun an eco-friendly city and to make people aware of their health status.

He said that this club was formed by himself and Sumit Grover three years back with the motto "Go cycling,

Go Green".

"More than 132 locals, including 30 girls and

ladies of Dehradun, are

members of the club out of which 35 are active members including doctors, advocates,

and chartered accountants etc.

Cycling is a healthy,

low-impact exercise that

can be enjoyed by people of all ages from young to older

people. Earlier we used to conduct weekly cycle rides

with only 15-16 people but after getting good response from local citizens a proper cycling club was formed in 2011. More than 100

people participated in the first ride to Poanta organised by the club," he said.

SCC has been organising regular bicycle promotion rides, rallies and events for the past three years for generating public awareness about pollution free environment and health issues, but for the last one year, no such event was conducted due to some problems but on January 26, 2014 a ride will be conducted,

he added.

He said that roads in Dehradun are not safe for riding bicycles; so a place should be designated with proper facilities for riding bicycle so that people

can ride cycles without

any problem.

"It is very difficult to conduct a ride as the authorities are not cooperative," he added.
