The officers of the cyber crime police station, Uttarakhand educated the police officers of Police Headquarters about precautions to be observed while visiting social networking sites at PHQ auditorium on Saturday. STF Uttarakhand and Cyber Crime Police Station in-charge SSP P Renuka Devi said that officers were informed about cyber crimes, ATM/bank fraud and social networking sites and the precautions to be observed while dealing with secret data and documents.

Inspector Bharat Singh instructed the officers about the precautions to be taken while working on the government computers and dealing with secret data and documents. Unauthorized PAN drives should not be used on  the government computers.  Antivirus should be updated from time to time, he warned.

Inspector Marut Sah talked about social media and highlighted about the precaution youths to take while using social networking sites. No official should paste mobile phone number, email id, photo, identity card and other important information on social networking sites.

Sub-inspector Ved Prakash Thapliyal said that ignorance is not bliss when it comes to using social media like Facebook and WhatsApp. “If you act on your impulses being unaware of the provisions of IT Act you are likely to land in trouble.

Upload anything you would not want everyone to see, assuming that it would remain generally unseen and you are likely to be in trouble,” he said.

“You should never put in more information about yourself than absolutely necessary. Hackers, scammers, stalkers all use these information to do anything that might be harmful to you from the security point of view.  On that same note, be careful how much live information you are putting out there,” he added.
