Beware! If you get anonymous phone calls or the same on the internet, giving you attractive offers or loans without risk or interest. You must not get entrapped. First verify them and then take the plunge if things are transparent. Otherwise, there is a possibility of you getting duped by fraudsters. Uttarakhand Cyber Cell police have busted a gang which has duped a large number of people, enticing them with lucrative investment offers and hefty loans against insurance policies.
The police have arrested the kingpin of the gang from Delhi who had allegedly cheated a Dehradun resident of around Rs 15 lakh on the pretext of providing him with investment plans and loan against insurance policies. The accused has been identified as Ashish Dube, native of Tilaknagar, Delhi, said STF SSP Dr Sadanand Date while interacting with media persons on Friday.
Dube confessed his crime while being grilled by the police, saying that he had been operating an organised gang from Delhi and the number of people thus defrauded was large. Their modus operandi was to entrap people through calls made from call centres.
Investigation revealed that the gang members consisting cyber experts and highly qualified persons had been stealing database of various insurance companies through internet and making calls to the customers of various insurance companies while convincing them to pay lakhs to obtain hefty loans and the like.
It is also learnt that the cheats used to change call centres frequently to hide their identities and also to enmesh more and more people in their vicious nets. They had also opened accounts in various banks with false documents. As per investigation, crores were deposited in ten bank accounts of the fraudsters. They are being probed, police said.
Sahaspur resident Dewang Gandhi who had been duped of around Rs 15 lakh on the same pretext registered a case under sections 420/467/468/471 of IPC against unidentified persons in the Sahaspur police station.
Understanding the gravity of the offences, senior police officers had transferred it to Cyber Cell Police Station for full-fledged investigation to bust the seemingly well-entrenched racket.
SSP Date also formed a team at police station level. SSP Date said that police have been deputed to probe the documents recovered during interrogation and the rest of the gang members would be arrested soon. Cyber crime cases are on the rise here for the past few years and people should be wary if anyone offers anything over phone or internet, he added.
