The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) will be holding its Platinum Jubilee Technofest during August 14-16 at the community centre of its constituent laboratory, CSIR-Indian Institute of Petroleum here in Dehradun.

The CSIR was established by the Government of India in 1942 as an autonomous body that has emerged as the largest research and development organisation in India. Although it is mainly funded by the ministry of Science and Technology, it operates as an autonomous body through the Societies Registration Act, 1860. The current director general of the CSIR is Girish Sahni. The CSIR has developed a number of technologies/ knowledge-base. It is known for its cutting-edge research and development knowledge-base in diverse science and technology areas. Having a pan-India presence, CSIR has a dynamic network of national laboratories, several outreach centres and some innovation complexes and units. CSIR’s research and development expertise and experience is embodied in its active scientists supported by scientific and technical personnel. CSIR covers a wide spectrum of science and technology – from radio and space physics, oceanography, geophysics, chemicals, drugs, genomics, biotechnology and nanotechnology to mining, aeronautics, instrumentation, environmental engineering and information technology. It provides significant technological intervention in many areas with regard to societal efforts which include environment, health, drinking water, food, housing, energy, farm and non-farm sectors. Further, CSIR’s role in science and technology human resource development is noteworthy. CSIR is also considered to be among the pioneers of India’s intellectual property movement.

Beginning in 1942, CSIR will be completing 75 years of its presence on India’s scientific horizon on 26th September, 2017, and its Platinum Jubilee celebrations have been afoot for the last one year. As a part of its Platinum Jubilee Year, CSIR has already taken part in scientific exhibitions like the Technofest-2016 organised at the Pragati Maidan, Delhi, and, now, under instructions of the CSIR Headquarters, the different national institutes/laboratories have been organising a chain of ‘Platinum Jubilee Technofests’ on similar themes.

CSIR will be holding this event during August 14-16 at the Community Centre of its constituent laboratory, CSIR-IIP in Dehradun between 10 AM and 5 PM which will present a unique opportunity for all the employees in the government organisations, the citizens in general and for students in particular to get a direct experience of research and development work while presenting an excellent occasion for the ex-IIPians to refresh their memories with the CSIR as also CSIR-IIP.
