The State Government has attached the Dehradun Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kewal Khurana to the Police Head Quarters with immediate effect. Improvement in traffic regulation and reducing crimes in the capital city are some of the challenges ahead of the new SSP.
Two murder cases were reported in the last three days in the city. Due to the weak network of informers, police have neither found concrete lead from questioning suspects nor ascertained the motive for these murders.
The murder of property dealer Sanjay Nagar on Friday in Dehradun has shocked people. Dehradun has seen a tremendous rise in land prices which has spawned land mafia. The gangs of western Uttar Pradesh have extended their activities to the region. Following lack of verification drives by the police, several wanted criminals are suspected to be hiding in the State capital.
As of now, police are unable to strengthen their network of informers following deployment of police station sub-inspectors and constables for resolving traffic congestion after completing investigations on registered complaints, which resulted in failure to solve murder cases.
Around 50-60 per cent murder cases are not solved. Police are deployed on traffic duty, law and order and VIP duty which has led to a weak network of informers. Improving traffic will be a major challenge in the state capital because protest marches and cultural processions have become routine affairs here. New district police head will have to take steps for improving traffic and reducing crime apart from keeping an effective track on the activities which are anti-social.
