CPUs told to submit performance reports

Personnel of the City Patrol Unit (CPU) which has elicited both praise and censure since its establishment will have their performance evaluated. While talking to The Pioneer on Friday, senior superintendent of police (SSP) Headquarters (CPU) Nivedita Kukreti said that police chiefs of the districts where the unit has been working, have been asked to submit reports on its performance. She further said that the CPU personnel whose performance would be found below par would be sent back to their earlier postings.

CPU was formed in Dehradun in April, 2014. The unit was extended later to Haridwar, Rudrapur, Roorkee and Haldwani as the works of the unit in stopping traffic rule violations won accolades from some quarters. However, at the same time, it has been facing flak for allegedly being more engaged in slapping challans than in performing duties they are tasked with.

Notably, CPU was conceived as a force which would strictly enforce the traffic rules on the roads while stopping reckless and drunk driving and forcing the riders of the two-wheelers to wear the helmets. Besides, the unit is tasked to stop illegal mining and sale of illicit liquor in areas they are deployed in.

Kukreti said that the performance of CPU personnel would be evaluated on the basis of their promptness in acting on the complaints received. “They are supposed to rush to the sites from where complaints of accidents, street crimes, snatching, drunk and reckless driving, illegal mining activities and the like are received. We would see whether they are rising up the occasion with full sincerity and promptness that is expected of them,” she said.

“Besides, we would see whether the CPU personnel are keeping the video recordings of both the parties while they are slapping challans on the errant motorists or the riders of the two-wheelers,” she said.

Around 197 police personnel from PAC and civil police were inducted in CPU, now operating at five places- Haridwar, Haldwani, Dehradun, Roorkee and Rudrapur. Currently four inspectors, 83 sub-inspectors and 110 constables are working for the five of its units across the State.
