Harmit Singh — the accused of the family massacre at Adarshnagar in Ballupur, Dehradun on the night of Diwali- was produced in the chief judicial magistrate Rajiv Kumar’s court on Monday.
A fracas occurred despite adequate police presence when a relative attacked Harmit in the court premises when he was being produced.
The court extended his judicial custody by two days (till October 29). However, on Monday too, Harmit’s statement was not recorded.
Police will seek permission from the court to take blood sample and finger print of the accused that they collected in course of the investigation into the case, said Cantt Police Station in-charge and inspector VK Jetha. Tempers flared up as the grandfather of Kanwal, the sole eye-witness of the blood-curling incident, had attacked Harmit when police was producing him in the court from the court locker. Harmit was cordoned off by the policemen. large number of family members had reached the court premises on Monday as they were aware of the fact that Harmit would be produced in the court.
Taking the possibility of Harmit being attacked by the family members seriously, the district police deployed adequate force in the campus. Police brought Harmit at 12 pm in the Court campus from the jail and he was produced in the court in the evening.
Jetha said that the police had questioned Harmit’s mother and his younger brother, but could not garner any major information from them. However, it has been cleared beyond doubt that Harmit Singh had perpetrated the gruesome crime, he added.
Advocate BD Jha said that Harmit kept on changing his statements. Harmit’s statement will be recorded under section 164 before the magistrate after seeking permission from the court. After the court’s order is received, the statement of the sole eye- witness, Kanwal will also be recorded under section 164. Enough evidences, including blood samples, finger prints and other forensic items, have been collected from the crime scene, it is learnt.
