Dehradun police have arrested a couple from Neshvila Road on Wednesday on the charge of burgling some shops in the city. Police said that the modus operendi of such crimes was that the husband used to come to the targeted shops by his car in the early morning hours between 4 am and 5 am and taking advantage of the places being desolate, he broke into the shops, looted them and decamped. The accused identified as Arjun Sharma and his wife Muskan Sharma, natives of Rohtak, Harayana, were currently living in Subhash Nagar in Clement Town area. It is further learnt from police that several cases of such burglaries remain tagged to Arjun in Punjab and Haryana.
Burglaries being reported from some areas in the city, SSP Nivedita Kukreti had formed several teams under the supervision of SP City PK Rai and circle officer Kotwali, Chandra Mohan Singh to crack them. Team members had been struck by a car found running suspiciously around various locked shops on Neshwila Road in the early morning hours. As police directed the driver to stop the car for checking of the documents he failed to produce the papers following which he was taken to the police station and questioned. Interrogation revealed that he had committed several burglaries in the Kotwali and Doiwala areas.
The accused reportedly confessed to having burgled the shops after breaking their locks. Interrogation further revealed that 30 cases of burglary and thefts have remained tagged to Arjun in the police stations of Punjab and six in other states. The shops thus burgled were located in Kurukshetra, Patiala, Rohtak, Ambala and Chandigarh among others. With Punjab Police being on the lookout for him, he had escaped to Dehradun and had taken a rented accommodation in the Clement Town area of the city.
Police said that the accused had tried to hoodwink them while giving them a false residential address at Sangrur in Punjab where no case was registered against him. The accused having no connection with his family members living in Rohtak, he used to give all the stolen items to his wife, police said. A case under appropriate sections of IPC against the duo has been registered in the Kotwali police station, said a police officer investigating the matter.
