Police have achieved another breakthrough in the sensational inter-state kidney racket with international links busted in a Doiwala-based charitable hospital in September, as two of the absconders-a couple carrying bounties- were arrested from Ghaziabad on late Sunday night.
Police said that Dr Sanjay Das and his wife Dr Sushma Kumari were anaesthesists whose service was taken before the kidney transplant. They further said that the teams- formed to round up all the accused on the run had raided several places in Bihar Uttar Pradesh and areas bordering Nepal in search of the fugitive doctor couple. “Finally they were arrested from Station More in Ghaziabad on Sunday. We are sure that the couple taken into custody would help us get to the bottom of the racket,” said a police officer, investigating the case.
Notably, Gangotri Charitable Hospital in Doiwala under Uttaranchal Dental College was being used as the centre of the kidney removal and transplant following an understanding reached with the hospital management. The probe revealed that those running the racket were in contact with the agents operating across the country and abroad who used to arrange the donors and the receivers. The kidney racket had been busted on September 11 as the joint team from Haridwar and Dehradun police had arrested an agent of the racket identified as Javed Khan, native of Mumbai. It was followed by the arrest of several others while some of the accused are still on the run.
