Tightening the noose of the local city transporters for their harsh behavior with the passengers, Dehradun traffic police officials instructed the city bus and vikram rickshaw operators to behave politely, especially with the female passengers.

Pradeep Rai, SP Traffic, acknowledged that the city busses, tempo and vikram rickshaw operators were issued necessary guidelines to be followed regarding their behavior with the female passengers. Transporters were asked to take care of their way of speaking especially when they are talking to any woman passengers travelling in their vehicles.

They were instructed not to charge extra fare from the woman passengers and also not to argue unnecessarily while dealing with female passengers. Transporters found violating the mentioned norms would be dealt strictly under IPC, he added. Woman passengers can also register their complaint in police regarding the rude behavior of the transporters and the offenders would be punished as per the level of their crime, said Rai.

Meanwhile, Dehradun police administration’s promises of ensuring safety and security of the women passenger by starting separate vikram rickshaw services for them in the city, has not proved to be a successful one. Interestingly, taking lessons from the last year heinous Gang rape incident and murder of a young student of physiotherapy in New Delhi by a group of youngsters in a bus, Dehradun police officials decided to introduce special vikram rickshaw’s services for the female passengers.

Till date only six separate vikram rickshaw’s for women’s are functional in the town. These vikram rickshaws are functional mainly on three routes of the city including Dharampur, ISBT and Rajpur road, informed Rai.  He stated that the vikram rickshaw services were started mainly on the major rotes of the city and a woman constable would are deployed in these auto rickshaws.

When asked about planning of any extra addition in the number of vikram rickshaw for the women’s, Rai, said that there is no such plan to augment the number of vikram rickshaw as no such demands have come yet.
