'Cops sitting in offices getting more medals than ones on field'

Police department facing criticism from all fronts for the cops who are working from their offices receiving more medals during Republic Day and Independence Day celebrations than those who are working in the fields, DGP BS Sidhu said they would give more importance to the latter than the former from now onwards.

It should be mentioned here that some policemen keep securing police medals during above occasions despite being deputed in police department’s offices for several years.

This happen because they receive excellent (confidential report) CRs from the police officers concerned, said a senior cop who insisted on anonymity.

A policeman  Raman Bisht (name changed) said, “Policemen who are deputed in police headquarters and district police office secure police medals despite the  fact that they do not face the heat of the  policing job on the ground. The system needs to be overhauled so that those throwing dare to the criminals and sweating hard to regulate traffic in the fields are not perpetually kept at bay,” he said.

Most in the police department the correspondent talked to agree that the policemen working in the fields to keep law and order, regulate traffic and the like are likely to receive average CRs from their seniors while those who are attached to the police departments get more appreciative CRs. Consequently, the latter get a lion’s share of the medals and they remain out of bounds for the former.  The trend tends to depress those who sweat and struggle against daunting odds to keep things flying for police, runs the opinion.

However, those policemen who do something wondrous while working in the fields are noticed and their names are forwarded the police headquarters and later, to the State Government. “But thousands of those who are sweating it daily to keep things in order negotiating challenges remain unhonoured and unsung. This is a tragedy,” said a senior state police officer.

Acknowledging that such discrepancies are happening, DGP Sidhu said that they would do everything to reverse the trend. He said that he had recently sent a list of policemen who performed exceptionally well in the police department to the Central Government.

“Here those who work in the fields figure more prominently than those who work from within the offices,” he said.
