Cops probing cases to act as 'brand envoys'

Sub-inspectors, who have been deployed to look into more than 1,000 cases lodged by kin about their relatives missing in the disaster witnessed in the State in last June, will work as a ‘brand ambassadors’ of Uttarakhand Police. While gathering the inputs as part of the investigation, the cops would try to present a humble image of Uttarakhand police.

Simultaneously, they would also share pain of the kin. A group of 60 sub-inspectors has been deployed on duty to investigate 1,676 cases registered by the kin of the missing persons. The cops have been asked to gather inputs in a polite manner and listen to the members of the missing persons patiently and console them, if possible.

Cops would visit 47 districts across India to gather the inputs. They would investigate the facts, including when the missing left home, who accompanied him or her, whether he was in a group, whether he left in a private vehicle or used a public transport, when he contacted lost, and the last location from where he called up.

Each cop has been given responsibility of around 30 cases on an average. He would travel to the districts. Apart from gathering inputs from the members of family, he would also speak to the neighbours to verify the fact. He would also seek help of local police station.Deputy Inspector General of Police Amit Sinha said, “The Sub-inspectors have been clearly directed to work as a brand ambassador of Uttarakhand police while carrying out investigation.

There are clear instructions to them that they have to talk to the members of the missing person’s family in a gentle manner and record each and every fact carefully.” Police have fixed a month deadline for completing investigation into the matter of missing cases. “All cops deployed on duty have been asked to submit the report, completing it within a month,” Sinha said, adding that hopefully the task would be completed within the set deadline as the cops have already left for their destinations.

“I want the cops to perform the task of investigation in a gentle manner to build up a very good image of Uttarakhand police before the people they are likely to meet in course of investigation. Therefore, I have asked the cops that they are going as a brand ambassador of their department,” Sinha said. He also explained to the cops about importance of the ‘brand’ before they left for carrying out the investigation.
