Vikasnagar police arrested two persons allegedly involved in the gangrape of a 15-year old girl reported in the Tyuni area of Dehradun district on January 1. Twenty-two-year-old Azhar and 18-year old Nikki — both Uttarakhand residents — were arrested from Himachal Pradesh on Tuesday morning. The duo was sent to Suddhowala jail after being presented in the court on Tuesday, said Tyuni Tehsildar DD Verma.

The Tehsildar informed that revenue police had discovered the body of the girl hanging from a tree about 500 metres from her home in the Tyuni area on January 2. Preliminary investigation had revealed that she had been gang raped and later murdered. The post-mortem examination confirmed that the girl had been gang raped and had died as a result of hanging.

A case was registered under sections 302/376 of IPC and sections 3/4 of Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

Vikasnagar police circle officer SK Singh said that police investigating the case received a tip off acting on which they arrested the two accused from Himachal Pradesh and handed them over to the revenue police.

In the meanwhile, in Dehradun the members of the Jaunsar Bhabar Women Students Union and DBS College students led by student leader Kamlesh Bhatt protested at the Collectorate demanding fair and transparent investigation of the case. The same demand had also been raised earlier on Monday by social workers in Dehradun.

Bhatt said that revenue police may not be able to conduct fair and transparent investigation of this case so this case should be transferred to regular police. In view of increasing gender crimes in Jaunsar Bhabar area which come under the jurisdiction of revenue police, the protesters also demanded that the state government set up a police station in Tyuni.
