Cops fail to arrest student leaders who 'attacked' Rai

Police seems to have succumbed to political pressure by failing to arrest student leaders who had allegedly attacked ABVP member Rahul Rai at his home, near Old Survey Road on Monday evening.

To wrap up the issue, Dehradun police released names of around 60 leaders of various students' groups against whom sections 107 and 116 of CrPC were imposed. FIRs were lodged against these students in various police stations in the past for their alleged involvement in scuffles between members of different students groups in the city.

Dalanwala police station in-charge inspector Anil Joshi said that in order to maintain law and order during students' union elections in various colleges, sections 116 and 107 of CrPC have been imposed against 60 leaders of various students groups.

These student leaders will have to submit bond before the magistrate stating that they will not get involved in any act which creates law and order problems in the city.

Some of these student leaders including NSUI members Vinit Prasad Bhatt, Alok Negi, Mohan Bhandari; ABVP members Anshul Chawla, Shankar Rawat, Paras Gupta, Narendra Sharma, Devendra Singh Bisht, Rakesh Negi, Sidharth Rana; Aryan Group members Jitendra Rawat, Satish Mohan Pant and Mahendra Singh Mahi; Pattu Group members Divyanshu Pratap, Jitendra alias Rinku; Satyam Group members Anil Rawat, Ankit Joshi, Jitendra, Parag Bhatt and Diwakar Group member Diwakar Dubey among others.

He further said that taking cognisance of a complaint wherein Old Survey road resident Ganesh Ram stated that his son Rahul Rai was attacked by NSUI members, a case under sections 147, 148, 452 and 307 of IPC was lodged against Vinit Bhatt and other NSUI members on Tuesday. Police have not arrested the named accused so far because police forces were deployed on election duty and Kanwad Mela. He expressed hope that police will soon be able to arrest the accused.

SP City Ajay Singh who assumed charge recently said that apart from taking measures to reduce crimes in the city, his first priority would be to ensure students' union election is held peacefully in various Government aided degree colleges.

Student leaders will not be allowed to take law in their hand and those are caught violating the law will be punished, he added.

Moreover, a student met DAV (PG) College Principal Devendra Bhasin and stated, "I come to college for appearing in examination only but police have imposed sections 107 and 116 of CrPC on me. Please save me sir, because my parents and other family members are worried about this."
