A woman who approached the Dehradun women's helpline alleged that the Jogiwala police post in-charge demanded Rs10,000 bribe from her for registering a case. Taking cognizance of this compliant, Dehradun SSP Kewal Khurana reverted him to the police line and appointed sub inspector Rajat Singh in his place.
However, this compliant was reported a day after SSP had convened a meeting with police posts in-charge strictly directing them to improve their performance in redressing public problems, reducing crimes and resolving traffic congestion in the area of their jurisdiction.
This incident has exposed the working style of police station in-charge when a person approaches the police station for registering an FIR for redressal of their disputes.
Majramafi resident Savita had approached the Jogiwala police chowki in-charge Girish Negi to resolve her family dispute wherein her brother in-law and other family members had disinherited her husband from the ancestral property. She alleged that the Chowki in-charge reached her home and demanded
Rs10,000 bribe for registering an FIR over alleged dispute. Angered by this, she approached the Women's helpline in-charge Dipika Rana and informed her about this incident.
later, Savita met the SSP and informed him about this. She also identified the police Chowki in-charge Negi when SSP presented him in front of her. Acting on her compliant, SSP has reverted Negi to police line and appointed sub-inspector Rajat Singh as Jogiwala Chowki in-charge.
This was not the first time in which a woman has approached the SSP for registering a case over her dispute after being denied by police station in-charge. Khurana receives such complaints often in his office. People can be seen approaching the SSP in his office for registering a case in the police station concerned after being denied by the station in-charge.
SSP Khurana is too aware about this that in some cases, police station in-charge do not register compliant unless they are instructed by him or senior police officer. SSP conducts meeting over this and directs the police station in-charge and police Chowki in-charge and results are remained same. One may wonder whether the SSP is able to effectively control the men and women under his charge.
