Cop alleges misbehaviour by Bhatt's son

The controversy related to the alleged misbehaviour and manhandling of two policemen by Digvijay, son of a senior BJP leader and the leader of the Opposition in the State Assembly Ajay Bhatt, has taken a new turn as one of the cops Jai Singh filed a petition under Section 156 (3) of CrPC in the court of chief judicial magistrate on Tuesday.

Singh’s advocate Sanjeev Sharma said that as per the complaint lodged by his client, Digvijay had misbehaved with him when he was enforcing traffic laws at Clock Tower. More importantly, Digvijay had threatened to have him fired, alluding to the power his father wielded. His complaint was not accepted by the Kotwali police and consequently, he could not register FIR in the Kotwali Police Station. Seeking a report over this incident from Kotwali police, the court has set March 12 for the next hearing of the case, Sharma said.

Dehradun Police has registered a case under Section 323, 504 and 506 of IPC against two constables on February 24 on the charge of misbehaviour allegedly meted out to the son and the daughter of Ajay Bhatt on February 22 evening. Demanding suspension of the accused cops, BJP members staged protest outside the SSP office.  Taking cognisance of the case, SSP had earlier transferred the two constables to police line.

The tussle happened when Bhatt’s son Digvijay was going to Clock Tower on his two-wheeler with his sister as the pillion. Two policemen -one a traffic police employee and another civil police employee- stopped and charged him with traffic rule violation as he was said to be moving in the wrong direction. Altercation ensued and the leader’s son said police had humiliated him.

With the dissemination of this information, senior police officers, including SP City, rushed to the spot and things cooled off for the time being.  However, Digvijay had lodged a written complaint, alleging that police had not just misbehaved but manhandled them. The policemen had abused them and even threatened them of dire consequences, he said in the complaint. His complaint was registered with alacrity while the one the accused cop was to lodge against the son of the leader was not accepted, forcing him thus to approach the court for justice.
