Considering the fact that contractual sanitation workers are doing the same work for the same hours like permanent sanitation workers of Municipal Corporation, they should be paid salary at par with what the permanent sanitation workers are getting, said National Commission for Safai Karamcharis, Government of India, member Vijay Kumar while presiding over a meeting with Safai officers and employees at Collectorate in Dehradun on Thursday.

On the occasion, Kumar was informed about the facilities provided to the sanitation workers as well as their problems. He sought information about the number of permanent and temporary employees working in Municipal Corporation. Mukhya Nagar Adhikari Nitin Bhadoriya informed that a total of 646 employees are permanent while 113 are working on contractual basis for Rs3000 per month.

Kumar expressed disappointment with the discrimination in salaries withdrawn by permanent and temporary employees though both are having the same duty and the same duty hours.Sanitation workers are lifting the garbage and protecting the health of the residents from diseases. They are doing yeomen’s service to the society as a whole. So all of them no matter whether they are permanent or contractual deserve better treatment. Sanitation workers should be given uniforms, gloves, masks and other necessary items on time, he stressed.

He directed the officers to take measures to make all the contractual sanitation workers permanent. On the occasion, MNA Bhadoriya informd that a proposal on increasing the salary from Rs3000 to 4000 per month for the contractual sanitation workers have been sent to the state government.
