Construction work leaves city roads in bad shape

Published on:

Many stretches of the city roads being dug up for several works, the road users have been facing problems. The problems are bound to turn more acute in the coming days with the monsoon season being round the corner. While the construction agencies are leading the list of the dug-up roads-they roads in the name of repair the damaged sewerage lines and peyjal lines- there are many departments which are engaged in the same, making the roads dangerous particularly following some spells of heavy shower. Several places like Karanpur, Dalanwala and Dharampur  are now having the same picture of holes gaping from the roads.

The citizens resent the fact that the construction agencies are now digging roads despite being aware of the approaching monsoon.

Statistics reveal that the number of accidents during the night hours due to roads being dug has been seeing a surge over the past few years.

Ramesh, resident of Dalanwala, said that an accident might happen any time during the night hours with the people driving cars or riding two- wheelers being unaware of the roads being dug up.  “We drive while risking our lives,” he said.

Suman Bisht, resident of Karanpur, said that the dug -up trenches should not be left open during the monsoon season. “Things turn dangerous  when it rains. Even the  pedestrians are not safe,” he said.

“All the roads, dug up earlier, need to be filled up at the earliest. The state government should ensure that such damaged roads should be at least two weeks before the onset of the monsoon season,” said Sachin Bhatt, resident of Kewal Vihar.

Ramesh Semwal, resident of Dalanwala, said that things cannot be left this way in the name of development. “What happens is that after the roads are dug up they are not repaired. Things are usually left this way for a long time. It is shocking that the same continues during the monsoon season,” he said.

Dehradun DM SA Murugeshan did not receive calls when this correspondent tried to contact him over this issue several times.
