Acting on the instructions of the chief secretary, the district administration has pulled up its socks to meet the target of construction of toilets in the district by May 15. The gram panchayat development officials have been asked to  complete the task well  before the deadline.

Directing the block development officers and assistant development officers based at the panchayat level, the district magistrate Haridwar S A Murgeshan said, “As per the video conference conducted by the chief secretary on April 13 under the Swacch Bharat Mission, 78,147 out of 1,06,356 families in the district have toilets in their houses till date. What follows is that  28,209  families are still defecating in the open. We must speed up things in sync with the chief secretary’s instructions.”

It is also learnt that to make Haridwar an open defecation free district, a committee at the block levels has been formed. The DM instructed the CDO to review the development regarding the construction of the toilets every week and submit a report after the weekly review is done.
