Conmen get kidnapped, rescued by police

In a kidnapping case in Cantt area, Dehradun police arrested two accused and rescued the abducted persons. However, officials have stated that this was classic case of an attempted fraud backfiring. It was revealed during the police investigation that the victims in this case were in fact trying to con the accused but their plan backfired and they ended up getting kidnapped.

The victims in this case have been identified as Gulsher and Tauseef, both natives of Saharanpur in Uttar Pradesh while the accused arrested are Zafar, resident of Saharanpur and Mohit, a resident of Dehradun. The other two accused who are at large have been identified as Sachin Rana and Nawab, both are natives of Saharanpur. However, local police have stated that with the investigation ongoing it is possible that names of other accused or accomplices may come up. Addressing media on Tuesday, Superintendent of Police (city) Shweta Choubey said, “On Monday late evening we received information through complainant Ejaz that a person named Khalil brought two people Gulsher and Tauseef from Saharanpur to Dehradun. Khalil conned them by saying that there is wealthy person in Dehradun who can be conned to sell his lands at low rates.

The complainant said that Khalil however had another plan and took them to meet Sachin and Nawab, who kidnapped them. They then contacted Ejaz to demand ransom of Rs 25 lakh for their safe return.” She further stated, “The amount of ransom though came down to Rs  five lakh after bargaining and they then set up a meeting.

Soon after receiving information we established a team and with the complainant started raiding the possible places where the kidnappers might have kept the victims.  The kidnappers were using mobile phone of one of the victims in order to contact the complainant. The kidnappers then asked him come with the ransom amount and meet them under the Ballupur flyover.  According to the plan the teams stationed themselves near the meeting point. First a private car came from Panditwari and went back after doing a thorough reconnaissance of the area.

After that another car came and one of the two men sitting in the car came out, snatched the dummy bag that we had provided to the complainant and ran towards the car.  He then threw two men out of the car. Local police team immediately after putting barriers stopped the car and searched them.” She added, “The other car which came earlier and the two accused who were supposedly sitting in the car took a U-turn as soon as they saw police arresting others.

Further investigation in the case is ongoing.”It is pertinent to mention here that the victim Gulsher stated that he arrived at Dehradun on Sunday evening, after which he was kidnapped and brutally thrashed.   One of the accused Mohit also raised his concern for his well being in the police custody in front of media.

The accused also said that the masterminds of the crime are still absconding. Police have seized one of the cars used in the crime.
