Congress facing risk of factionalism: Political analyst

Published on:

While the Congress party in Uttarakhand is consistently opposing the Bharatiya Janata Party State Government on various aspects, political observers are of the opinion that the Congress is also facing the risk of factionalism, becoming stronger within its cadre. During the budget session of the Vidhan Sabha, the Congress staged protest against the BJP outside the Assembly while its MlAs questioned the treasury benches on various aspects.

Earlier, the Congress also held a state wide protest against alleged attempts to cover up the scam in widening of National Highway 74 in Udham Singh Nagar district of the State. However, at the same time, observers point out that during the proceedings in the assembly the leader of opposition in the Vidhan Sabha, Indira Hridayesh also questioned one of the decisions of the previous state government led by the Congress.

The Uttarakhand Pradesh Congress Committee president Pritam Singh, leader of opposition Indira Hridayesh and former chief minister Harish Rawat are prominently leading the opposition of various aspects of the present state government. However, despite a show of unity, skeptics have reasons to believe that supporters of these three Congress leaders are yet to join forces. Apart from these, the previous PCC president Kishore Upadhyay has also become less visible in party programmes and protests which is further adding substance to talk of dissatisfaction rising among the party cadre.
