Congress demands cancellation of bogus postal ballots

Published on:

The Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) president Ganesh Godiyal has said that the Election Commission (EC) should cancel such postal ballots which are bogus. In a letter to the chief electoral officer (CEO) of Uttarakhand, Godiyal said that the EC provides the facility of the postal ballots to the in-service armed forces personnel. He said that it has come to his notice that the list of postal ballots provided by different district election officers shows the names of many such voters who have either retired or have died. He claimed that he has credible information that many such non eligible candidates are in the list of the postal ballots of service voters. Godiyal demanded that in view of the free and fair conduction of the elections it is imperative that such postal ballots which are issued in the names of dead and retired armed forces personnel are cancelled. He added that disciplinary action against the officer certifying such bogus voters should be taken as per the law.

In another letter directed to the CEO, the PCC president said that many tender notices for construction related works were floated by the Uttarakhand Power Corporation Limited (UPCL) after the declaration of election in the state by the EC. He said that such tenders too should be cancelled as they are an open violation of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) enforced in the state in view of the assembly elections. He added that strict action should be initiated against the officers responsible for the violation of MCC.
