The Uttara Bahuguna suspension issue snowballing into a major controversy with the opposition parties and some teachers’ organisations jumping into the scene, the ruling BJP is struggling to defend the embattled Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat at whose order the Education department suspended the teacher. Notably, as the CM had ordered her suspension after the lady teacher sparred with him over transfer during the Janta Darbar programme held at the CM’s residence on Thursday Bahuguna, posted as headmistress of the Government school at Jyesthwadi village in Uttarkashi district, was suspended by education department on Friday.
The Prathemik Shikshak Sangh (PSS), the association of the primary teachers of the State, has demanded that the department should first answer the issues raised by the teacher before taking action against her. The general secretary of the organisation Digvijay Singh said that the organisation does not support the language used by the teacher during the CM’s darbar. “However, the fact remains that she is eligible for the transfer as per the norms laid down in the Transfers Act- 2017 as she is 57 years old, she has done the required service in a hard to access school and is a widow,” he said, adding that the outburst on her part might be from long pent-up frustration.
Meanwhile, as announced earlier, the State Congress staged stir across the State, condemning the ‘autocratic’ behaviour of the Chief Minister towards a teacher, on Saturday. The congress workers burned the effigy of the BJP Government in all the district headquarters of the State as part of the demonstration.
In Dehradun, the party workers staged protest outside their district office on Railway Road and slammed the CM for insulting a female teacher. The district party president Jayendra Ramola said that a female teacher- who is a widow -being humiliated, arrested and suspended during the CM’s Janata Darbar where she had gone to vent her grievances is very shameful. “This smacks of arrogance of the Chief Minister and the Government he is heading,” he said.
In a statement, the former PCC president Kishore Upadhyaya said that the CM should revoke the punitive action against Uttara Bahuguna. He warned that the anger of the people on the issue can trigger a massive agitation in the coming days.
The Uttarakhand Kranti Dal (UKD) and Aam Aadami Party (AAP) activists also staged protest on the same on the day. PNS n Dehradun
