Cong stages candle march for Ganga crusader Sanand

To pay homage to Swami Sanand who had breathed his last at AIIMS Rishikesh on Thursday after a marathon fast of 110 days for the cause of Ganga, the Congress took out a candle march here on Saturday.

The activists of Mahanagar and district Congress committee took part in the march which started from the State party office and culminated at Clock Tower.

In a statement, the Mahanagar Congress said that the apathetic attitude of the Centre and the state government was responsible for the death of the Ganga crusader.

The statement adds that despite a humungous sum of Rs 20000 crore being spent on cleaning Ganga, the pollution level of the sacred river remains as alarming as ever.

The Congress leaders sounded shocked over the fact that none of the central or State leaders of the ruling party has so far  cared to visit Haridwar and offer condolence  to the family members of Sanand and the ascetics associated with him for years.

Among the Congress leaders who participated in the candle march were the former state party chief Kishore Upadhaya, former minister Dinesh Agarwal and the state party vice- president Surya Kant Dhasmana.
