'Concrete jungle' worries city residents

Published on:

As the State’s capital is rapidly seen to be turning into a concrete jungle, the constructions going on in the city have been causing major inconvenience to the city residents.People complained that they have no idea where construction is taking place or is about to take place. And this is what is resulting in mishaps, the refrain runs.A minor accident occurred on Wednesday evening near the Secretariat where a cyclist was hit by an impatient biker trying to take over in an area where construction is going on."Had the area been rightly barricaded the incident might not have happened," said city resident Rajendra Pal, who was present when it happened. This kind of minor mishaps take place daily and mostly, the pedestrians bear the brunt of things, he added.

"The authorities have not cared to put up a sign board marking the construction site. In this particular place, construction has been going on for the past few weeks," said shopkeeper Rajesh who owns a shop on Rajpur Road. The pedestrians are suffering the most as they can neither walk on the roads due to heavy traffic nor can they use the footpaths which are well-nigh non-existent in most of the roads of the city. The under-construction site not being specified is adding to their woes," he further informed.

Speaking about the heavy traffic and increasing mishaps on the road, a policeman posted near St Joseph’s Academy informed, "Earlier tapes were used in some areas near the school, but they were damaged by the vehicles continuously moving on this road. Barricades are being used. But accidents take place as people are impatient and even after seeing the condition of the roads, they take their vehicles over stones and gravels and eventually fall, resulting in the loss of life and limb."

"The authorities as well as the people are to blame for this. Firstly, the authorities should mark such places and secondly, when people can see the condition they should be patient," said college student Nikhil Singhal."The construction currently going on Rajpur Road has now become a major issue of concern. No proper sign board is put up and mishaps are occurring almost daily because of the brazen carelessness on the  part of the authorities. They should mark the area as an under-construction site," said city resident Manju Sharma.
