Rising incidents of women creating nuisance in drunken state on the roads are leaving police worried. A senior State cop said police can hardly intervene save for slapping challans on persons caught creating nuisance at public places. “Society as a whole should come forward. The roles of the parents are paramount. Those who are making spectacles of themselves should be dissuaded from plunging such a low by their parents and others,” he added.
In Patelnagar, a woman had created nuisance under the influence of liquor on Monday night, police said. She had beaten her children without any rhyme or reason in inebriated state. Besides, she had abused those who had intervened to resolve the issue, police added.
A few days ago, a girl student of a college did the same at Darshan lal Chowk. When police stepped in to stop her from making a scene of herself she allegedly manhandled the police personal. She was booked under appropriate sections of IPC and sent to shelter home, Nari Niketan.
On Sunday, some college students, including girls, had indulged in the same wantonness while attending a party hosted in a hotel on Rajpur Road. Police reached the hotel after receiving complaint. Seeing cops, some youths took to their heels while others could not escape, drunk as they were. Few of the girls were found creating scenes in drunken state. They were penalised under Police Act and were made to vacate the place.
Observers opine that things are worsening apace. “Earlier, a girl was seldom seen consuming liquor in public places. Dehradun being deemed as a hub of education with students from across the country arriving here for higher education, such wantonness on the part of the girls was unthinkable. However, now, with the texture of the societal ethos changing fast, such things are being seen almost daily,” said an observer.
DGP BS Sidhu said that they have imposed challans on such women.
Besides, a woman caught manhandling police were sent to a shelter home, Nari Niketan, after she was presented in the city magistrate’s court, he said. In some similar cases, parents and their relatives were informed and sent for and later, the girls were handed over to their parents after being warned, he added.
