Member of Board of Governor of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee and advisor of Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat, Narendra Singh has assured support to 35 employees of IIT Roorkee, the services of whom are being terminated by the institute. The premier institute has decided to discontinue the service of employees, appointed on compassionate grounds from June this year.
In a statement, Singh said that he will raise the issue in the senate of the institute and Ministry of Human Resource Development (HRD) to ensure that reprieve is provided to these workers. “From media reports I have come to know that services of 35 employees appointed on compassionate grounds are being terminated. I have worked as a teacher in this institute. Now in my new capacity in board of Governors, I would raise the matter in the senate and also with the HRD Ministry,’’ he said.
It is worth mentioning here that these employees are sitting on an indefinite hunger strike in the IIT Roorkee campus.
On compassionate ground, the widow or children of the deceased workers are appointed. These 35 workers were appointed in entry-level posts after the death of their father or husband working in the institute for long. On January this year the institute gave a notice to these employees that the board of institution has decided not to grant further extension to them after June, 30 2018.
These workers were appointed on compassionate ground on a fixed consolidated salary in group C and D positions of the institute.
Agitated by the decision of termination, these workers are now on the warpath. They are also demanding apart from reinstating their services the institute should give permanent appointment to them.
