Apart from establishment of climate change centre in Uttarakhand, efforts are being undertaken as per the national mission on sustaining Himalaya. The work plan has been prepared with formation of climate action group, sectoral group and knowledge management group. This was stated in a meeting of the State council on climate change presided over by State Chief Secretary Shatrughna Singh here on Thursday.
Professor Ravindra Nath from the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, professor AK Gosain from the IIT-Delhi and other experts spoke in detail about the repercussions of global climate change.
Nath said that there is scientific evidence of climate change with the ambient temperature in Himalaya region rising to an alarming level. Considering the signs of acceleration in snow melting and breaking of glaciers, assessment of the damage and potential threats resulting from this needs to be made, he added. Eliciting focus on the impacts of global climatic change, Gosain said that in Uttarakhand, the Tehri and Champawat districts appear to be the most affected districts.
After this, the detrimental effects of climate change will be experienced in Haridwar, Almora and Bageshwar districts, Gosain said. Singh granted approval to set up automatic weather station, formation of 43-member climate action group, 20-member working group and knowledge management cell.
The principal secretary, power, Umakant Panwar, irrigation secretary Anand Vardhan, information technology secretary and other officials concerned were also among those present in the meeting.
