The level of sanitation in Dehradun has not improved substantially though garbage disposal has been resumed in many places. According to officials of the Municipal Corporation of Dehradun, it will take a couple of days for the sanitation level to return to normalcy.
Councillors have long been complaining about the failure of the MCD to ensure the desired level of civic sanitation in the State capital.Recently, after the route to the municipal trenching ground was blocked, the Doon Valley Waste Management company stopped collecting and dumping of garbage here. Though the MCD deployed its resources to provide an alternative arrangement, this had limited effect as the corporation has limited number of vehicles to pick up the trash and dump it in the trenching ground.
Dehradun Mayor Vinod Chamoli states that the working method of the MCD administration is a major factor responsible for such anomalies in important civic tasks. According to the corporation officials, the collection and dumping of garbage has been resumed but since it had not been undertaken fully for four days, it will take a couple of days more to clear the backlog of garbage which has been accumulating in the city for the past four days. However, observers point out that the disagreements between the Mukhya Nagar Adhikari and the DVWM have not been resolved completely yet.
The MNA is also accused by some councilors of being apathetic to issues raised by public representatives. While a temporary agreement appears to have been reached between the MCD administration and the company, it remains to be seen whether differences in the future will again hamper important tasks like the maintenance of civic sanitation in town.
More than 200 tonnes of solid municipal waste is generated in Dehradun every day and its proper scientific disposal is still not facilitated. The sanitation level is expected to improve once facilities being constructed as part of the Rs 24.6 crore solid waste management project under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission are ready for use.
