City Patrol Unit, which has remained mired in controversy since its inception, will be administrated by DIG of Garhwal and Kumaon ranges in their respective areas. Earlier, CPU was administrated by Police Headquarters.
SP Nivedita Kukreti at PHQ was assigned to administrate CPU which is functional in Dehradun and Haridwar. State Director General of Police BS Sidhu presided over a meeting with the police officers and reviewed the performance of CPU personnel working at PHQ.
Sidhu said that two units of CPU will be launched in Haldwani in Nainital district and Rudrapur in Udham Singh Nagar district soon. The CPU personnel were selected and they are being trained now. As of now, the CPU personnel have been deployed in Haridwar and Dehradun. As a part of expansion of CPUs in the State, we have decided to bestow the administrative power involving CPU on DIG of ranges, he added.
The City Patrol Unit was formed to enforce traffic law while Swift Response Teams were raised to deal with crimes like chain snatching, eve-teasing, scuffles and other offences in the cities where they exist.
local shopkeepers are bearing resentment over CPU for allegedly being busy in imposing challans indiscriminately on persons for violating traffic rules, leaving adverse impact on their trades.Give the level of resentment brewing over the CPU from the ends of politicians and the traders, the future of CPU in Uttarakhand looks bleak.
local political leaders said that City Patrol Unit has become a money-spinning machine for the police department. Some CPU personnel also expressed apprehension over their future postings in the absence of Government rules, manuals and uniform.
