City patrol unit urged to stop videography of traffic violators

Taking cognisance of Doon residents’ discomfort over videography of traffic violators by the police city patrol unit and their irregular uniform, Rajpur Road MlA Rajkumar met the Garhwal Range Deputy Inspector General of Police Amit Sinha and submitted a memorandum demanding their activities be stopped immediately.

The MlA said that that some college students and women of the city met him and complained about videography of traffic violators by the city patrol unit personnel. Complainants expressed their apprehension about misuse of the video clips. This unit is responsible for causing undue anxiety among vehicle users,he said.

Talking to The Pioneer, Rajkumar questioned establishment of this unit by police department as traffic police have already been imposing challan on traffic violators and they are still doing so. “The police should use this unit as swift response team for crimes like chain snatching, eve teasing and other offences in the city rather than deploying it for imposing challan on traffic violators,” he suggested.

Taking cognisance of this complaint, DIG Sinha reviewed workings of city patrol unit with district police officers on Thursday. This unit comprises 28 sub-inspectors and 29 constables.Sinha directed the police officers to deploy this unit for conducting checking periodically and make it more sensitive towards the public.

He directed the police officers to develop highway patrolling system on various roads in the city.  This unit should be made more sensitive to resolve traffic congestion and implement traffic rules on roads apart from which the unit should be used as swift response teams for crimes like chain snatching, eve teasing and other offences in the city, he added.

He would review this team’s workings weekly at his office. Among those present on the occasion were SP city Navneet Singh Bhullar,SP traffic PK Rai and other police officers.
