Child swapping case: SCPCR chairperson visits GDMC Hospital

Published on:

To investigate the incident in which a couple had complained that the hospital staff had changed its new born baby, the chairperson of State Commission for Protection of Child Right (SCPCR) Usha Negi visited the GDMC Hospital on Thursday. Moved by the plight of the baby girl to whom the couple is refusing to accept as its child, she persuaded the women to lactate the baby. Negi told the mother that she would feel very bad if on investigation it gets proved that she is the mother of the girl child. On the assurance of the chairperson of SCPCR, the women fed the baby with her milk.  Negi said that the SCPCR has directed the authorities to conduct DNS test of the girl child to confirm its parents.

In a bizarre incident, a woman and her family members in the female wing of the GDMC hospital had raised commotion on Tuesday night when they claimed that the hospital staff had earlier told them the woman has given birth to a male boy but later handed them a girl child. The agitated family members charged the staff for handing over their male baby to another woman who also delivered a child at the same time and demanded that DNA test of the child should be done to confirm its parents. Ironically while two families fought for the male child, the female child was rejected by both of them. On the complaint of the couple, the hospital administration has set up an inquiry committee. During her visit, the chairperson of the SCPCR appeared far from satisfied by the condition of the female wing of the GDMC hospital. She especially expressed her annoyance on pathetic condition of the Neo Natal Intensive Care Unit (NICCU) ward where the new born babies are kept immediately after the birth. Negi also appeared angry on noticing that many employees of the hospital getting hooked on to their smart phones.
