Three days of incessent rainfall has affected traffic on the Char Dham Yatra circuit apart from the various connecting roads under the purview of the Public Works Department in various parts of the Garhwal region.
Incidents of heavy rainfall, landslide, mudslides and road blockages reported from various areas have also thrown routine life out of gear in the Garhwal region. Apart from triggering landslides which have blocked numerous roads in the region, heavy rainfall also resulted in a rise in the level of water in the Alaknanda and Mandakini rivers creating dangerous conditions especially for people living along the banks of the rivers, nearby and low lying areas in the region.
The level of water in both the Alaknanda and Mandakini rivers was reported to be below the danger level on Sunday. The water level in Alaknanda in Srinagar was reported at 535 metres with the danger level being 636 metres.
However, there is a possibility of the water level rising in case of further spells of heavy rains. Considering the probability of the Alaknanda river undergoing alterations in its course, the idol of Hanuman from the temple in Farasu has been carried out of the shrine, said Srinagar resident Sudhir Bhatt.
A total of 11 houses which had been evacuated some years ago by the GVK company involved in the hydro power project, were immersed due to rise in level of water in the reservoir of the Srinagar hydro electric project in the district.
Pauri district magistrate Chandra Shekhar Bhatt told The Pioneer that the GVK company has been instructed to ensure exit of the overflow of the reservoir of the Srinagar hydro power project continously to avoid any danger.
While a total of 29 roads under the purview of PWD were reportedly blocked in the district on Sunday, the national highways are largely open for traffic though various connecting roads are blocked following landslides and mudslides.
In the Khirsu block of the district, the Sangori village has become vulnerable due to landslide caused by heavy rain. Two families living in the homes vulnerable to landslide have shifted to other locations from here.
