Chakrata Road encroachments removed

The District administration continued its drive against roadside encroachments on Wednesday by removing them from Chakrata Road. Dozens of encroachments by shop owners were demolished and the goods displayed in these areas were also confiscated.

The drive against encroachments on the footpaths and city roads started on Monday following High Court orders regarding freeing the city roads of encroachments. On the first day of the drive, dozens of encroachments were demolished on the roadside from Clock Tower to Dilaram Chowk.

The drive was not conducted on Tuesday due Ramnavmi holiday. On Wednesday, the officials of Municipal Corporation of Dehradun, district administration, Mussoorie Dehradun Development Authority and Public Works Department conducted the drive on Chakrata Road amid heavy police presence. The officials faced arguments from members of the business fraternity in some places, but the drive was conducted without any major obstruction.

The officials gave the traders time to remove or demolish the encroachments themselves but failing this, the authorities razed the encroachments. Notably, these encroachments are the main reason for the city roads becoming narrower which is responsible for chronic traffic congestion in various parts of the State capital. The authorities will continue the anti-encroachment drive in future, informed State officials.
