Centre sends back State Govt's proposals on eco-sensitive zones

The Ministry of Environment and Forests has raised objections over three of the seven proposals sent by Uttarakhand Government for setting up of eco sensitive zones in the State. These three proposals have been sent back to the State Government for revision. It should be mentioned here that the Ministry intended to establish eco sensitive zones around 60 protected areas across the country including in Uttarakhand which has six national parks, six wildlife sanctuaries and two conservation reserves. Though the Ministry had been repeatedly seeking the proposals on eco sensitive zones from the State authorities, protest by locals and politicians after declaration of the Bhagirathi eco sensitive zone in Uttarkashi district, made the State authorities more cautious in the drafting of eco-sensitive zone proposals.
Uttarakhand Government has given a proposal for declaring eco sensitive zones around Binog wildlife sanctuary, Nandhaur wildlife sanctuary and Nanda Devi biosphere reserve. The Centre has objected to territorial maps linked to these proposed eco sensitive zones submitted by the State. Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife) AK Datt said that the proposals for eco-sensitive zones would now be submitted first to the State Cabinet before being submitted to the ministry.
