Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has finally registered a case over a year after a 12-year-old girl was raped and murdered by unidentified persons in a sugarcane field near Bhatta Colony under Pathri Police Station when she had gone to answer nature’s call in the open on January 7, 2014. The information has relieved the bereaved parents and the State Government. Things were depressing after news came from some sources that CBI had declined to accept the case.

State Additional Director General of Police (law and order) Ram Singh Meena on Thursday disclosed that CBI has accepted the case. The Haridwar district police had worked hard to crack it but they failed. Following this, the State Government had decided to transfer the case to the CBI. After incident, several teams were formed and they had conducted investigation. CBI may collect the investigation reports submitted by the Haridwar police, he added. Sources revealed that Haridwar police have received a letter from the CBI, highlighting a fresh case has been registered under sections 376d, 302 and 201 of IPC, ¾ Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act against unidentified persons.

Victim’s parents along with around dozen members of some non-government organisations and members of various political parties had demanded CBI inquiry into the heinous rape/murder case.   Taking cognisance of this, Chief Minister Harish Rawat had ordered CBI inquiry. Earlier, ex- CM Vijay Bahuguna had also assured the victim’s family of his initiatives to ensure a CBI inquiry if police failed to nab the accused in 15 days of the incident.
