Case against cop for manhandling, slapping IAS probationer

In the name of enforcing traffic rules and ensuring smooth flow traffic in the city, Dehradun Police had earlier misbehaved with a local MlA and now a policeman allegedly slapped an IAS probationer on Saturday night in Mussoorie. When Mussoorie Police Station was approached to register complaint against constable by the victim, initially his request was ignored and later a case was registered in the police station against accused constable on direction of a senior officer.

later, constable was suspended. These two incidents have highlighted police attitude towards political executives, officers and common people at large. Observers opine that the assignment of additional hours of duty to the police could be one of the reasons for cops losing their temper while dealing with road users. According to them, except some important occasions, duties of these police personnel should not be extended beyond limit.

Mussoorie Police Station in-charge Bhagat Singh Rawat informed The Pioneer that a case has been registered against a constable who had allegedly misbehaved and manhandled an IAS probationer on Saturday night. The constable was suspended and an inquiry has been set up in this regard, he added.

Sources revealed that IAS probationer who had parked his vehicle at the Kempty Falls car parking advised the constable to work properly to manage parking and prevent congestion. “Disorder prevails in the parking area as you are not executing your duties effectively,” the probationer is reported to have told the cop. This angered the cop who questioned the probationers right to advise him. While the IAS probationer was explaining who he was, the constable allegedly slapped him.

The angered probationer reached the Mussoorie Kotwali police station where the officer initially took this issue casually and later, FIR was registered on the direction of senior police officer.

The Dehradun Senior Superintendent of Police, Kewal Khurana, had directed the police officers and constables several times to execute their duties as per law without misbehaving with citizens while dealing with them or creating unnecessary problems for road users in the name of enforcing traffic laws. However, the attitude of the police and complaints being received about the apathy and misbehaviour of the cops on duty seems to show that the SSP has not been able to make the men and women under him work as required.
