Cantonment Council urged to issue NOC for new bridge

The Secretary of the Cantonment Youth Committee, Pravin Joshi has shot off a letter to the President of the Cantonment Council, Dehradun, regarding the alleged inaction by the authority concerned over their previous complaints concerning revamping or constructing a new bridge in place of the pre-existing colonial era iron bridge that connects Garhi Cantt to Birpur.

In the letter, Joshi said continued silence of the Cantonment Board and district administration over the serious matter was deafening. He said things looked ominous, as even after the Chief Minister’s office having accepted the proposal for a new bridge or the restoration of the old one, the matter is being ignored.

“The Government sought a no-objection certificate from the Public Works Department to start off the long-pending work. But the NOC is still elusive with the sub-area headquarters seemingly sitting on it,” he said.

He lamented the fact that the important work has been hanging fire in the absence of the required NOC. The time-worn bridge being in a dilapidated condition might crumble anytime, resulting in a big mishap, he said while reminding the Cantonment Council of the hardships and risks the common people are facing in their daily lives while crossing the old, doddering bridge.
