The Uttarakhand women’s commission will organise legal awareness camps in all parts of the State for making women aware about their legal rights. The newly-appointed chairperson of the commission Sarojini Kaintyura said this while talking to newsmen shortly after assuming charge on Wednesday. Kaintyura was appointed on the post of the chairperson of women commission by the State Government recently.
Interestingly, the position of the chairperson was lying vacant for about three years due to which work of the commission was being affected. Kaintyura claimed that she would try to rejuvenate the commission. She said that she would undertake extensive tour of the State to get acquainted with the problems faced by women. The newly appointed Chairperson said that the women of the State lack in the legal knowledge so she is planning to organise legal camps in all parts of the State. The commission would take the help of legal luminaries for these camps.
She added the commission would endevour to make the women of the state self reliant. Kaintyura said that a drive against female infanticide is on top of her priority list. “Girls are more sensitive and caring than boys, the society needs to be educated to prevent girls from getting killed in womb. The commission would undertake massive awareness drive for this,” she said.
On the question of Women Reservation Bill, Kaintyura said that the NDA Government should bring froth the Bill as it is having a complete majority in the lok Sabha. She was of the opinion that the Bill would go a long way in the field of women empowerment. Kaintyura claimed that the Congress in Uttarakhand has started giving more representation to women in all forums and the party has given tickets to 10 women in last assembly elections and in all probability this number would increase in elections of 2017.
