Cabinet will consider need for NRC in U’khand: CM

Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat has said that the State Government will consider the implementation of National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Uttarakhand. Talking to media persons here on Monday, he said that the Cabinet will deliberate upon the NRC to ascertain whether it is needed in the State. He said, “The talk of NRC in the country is justified. For quite some time, a section of intelligentsia has also been raising concern about rising number of illegal migrants. The NRC is needed to stop such intrusion by illegal migrants.”

He further said, “We will check whether it is needed in Uttarakhand or not. If it is found necessary we will implement the NRC in the State. This is because the Uttarakhand State is surrounded by international borders and illegal migrants intruding here can lead to a very serious situation,” he said.

It is pertinent to mention here that in the past, some leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party in Uttarakhand had averred that apart from illegal Bangladeshi migrants, even illegal Rohingya migrants had settled in Dehradun and other parts of the State.

Responding to that, the Chief Minister had stated that illegal migrants, be they Bangladeshis or Rohingyas would be shown out of the State. Rawat’s statement comes after three of his counterparts from Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Jharkhand have recently spoken about the possibility of implementing the NRC in their respective States.
