It is important to not only observe standards but also know about them, said the Institution of Engineers, Uttarakhand State Centre chairman Ranveer Singh Chauhan. He was speaking at a programme organised by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), Dehradun branch to mark World Standards Day.

Addressing the gathering on the occasion, Chauhan  spoke on the importance of the standards while also congratulating the BIS for discharging its important responsibility in the area of standardisation.

Earlier, while welcoming the gathering, the BIS Dehradun branch head AM David spoke on this year’s World Standards Day theme- international standards and the fourth industrial revolution. He opined that some aspects of the fourth industrial revolution could also be scary as it involves new technologies at a time when such technologies are being replaced by newer technologies even before one gets time to get accustomed. The confluence of technologies can have beneficial effects but if not harnessed and managed properly they can also lead to chaos as in the case of social media.

While social media is good for connectivity and information sharing, it can also be used as a weapon and an indirect factor causing imbalance in the attitude of people. Referring to the technological developments, he said that one is unable to comprehend the rate of change in technology. Proper guidelines and standards are needed to ensure proper harnessing of technology, he said.

BIS Dehradun scientist SK Sahana read out the joint message of the International Electrotechnical Commission, International Organisation for Standardisation and International Telecommunication Union. Later during the technical session, representatives of various industrial enterprises made presentations on the theme of this year’s World Standards Day.
