BSP goes into political oblivion, vote share too takes a plunge for the first time

The surge in favour of the Bharatiya Janata Party  in Uttarakhand in the Assembly elections 2017 not only trounced the Congress but sent Bahujan Samaj Party, the third political force in the state into political oblivion. For the first time ever since the creation of a new State, the BSP failed to open its account in Uttarakhand assembly. What is more painful for the party that is its vote share which was consistently on rise from last three elections took a plunge.  Based on its past performance and its social engineering in Haridwar and Udam Singh Nagar districts the party was hoping to be in a position of Kingmaker in Uttarakhand. However the Modi magic took wind out of the sails of BSP and all its candidates tasted defeat in the electoral battle.  The party leaders were claiming that their Dalit- Muslim plank would get it through in as many as ten assembly segments of Haridwar and U S Nagar districts but apart from loosing in all these seats its candidates managed to finish second in only two assembly constituencies. In Khanpur Mufti Riyasat Ali lost to Pranav Singh Champion by 13734 votes while in Manglaur sitting MlA Sarvat Kareem Ansari lost to Quazi Mohd Nizamuddin.  The BSP leaders are baffled by these results; the state party President Brihurasion Rao also expressed surprise on the poll outcome. Though not able to challenge the dominance of BJP and Congress in the state, the BSP was slowly but steadily increasing its vote share. The party got 10.9 percent votes and won seven seats in the first assembly elections of the state in the year 2002. In the elections of 2007, the party increased its vote percentage to 11.8 to bag eight seats. In the elections of 2012, the party further increased its vote share and cornered 12.2 percent of total votes polled but could manage to win only three seats (Manglour, Bhagwanpur and Jhabreda). However the party assumed the position of Kingmaker and facilitated in the formation of a Congress government.  The political analysts are of view that poor performance of BSP in neighbouring Uttar Pradesh spilled over to Uttarakhand also. They believe that tag of supporters of Congress stuck on BSP in the state and people rejected it along with Congress.
