Combining spiritualism with shringar and other rasas, including joy, as evident in its musical discourse, the Kumaoni Holi has its own significance even today. It not only signifies victory of good over evil but also marks the end of winter and commencement of the sowing season, bringing joy and happiness to all.

Some of the old traditions may no longer relevant in today’s modern way of life, but Kumaoni Holi still assumes special significance for the people here because it comes a bridge between the rich traditions of ancient India and modern day lifestyle. Use of traditional folk music and modern day music in these Holi celebrations is a manifestation of it.

The Kumaoni Holi is all about music. Along music sarcasm is another aspect of this festival of colours. Whether it is ‘Khari Holi’, ‘Bathaki Holi’ or ‘Mahila Holi’, all these forms of the Holi festival connects well with the people. The people including women take part in these Holi celebrations in a big way.

New generation may not be much aware about the traditional Kumaoni Holi songs and the festival itself, but they take part in this festival with same enthusiasm as the senior citizens do.

Holi is a tradition that we have been following for generations. But charm of this festival still continues to attract people from generation to generation, said Balram, an old hand in Kumaoni culture here.

Though, many social organisations nowadays organise Holi programmes, much needs to be done to make the people aware about the traditional Kumaoni Holi, he added.

Meanwhile, as the music dominates Holi celebrations so is different type of colours. With presence of a variety of colours in market places, herbal colours can also be seen in shops for sale. More so, availability of pumps to spray colours in different shapes and sizes in the markets have only attracted the attention of not only children but that of elders also.
