In connection with the case of a woman constable committing suicide after her boyfriend, a constable himself, refused to marry her, the accused constable and his family members have been absconding to evade arrest.
Dehradun SSP Sadanand Date said that teams have been deployed at various places to nab the accused. Acting on the report lodged by the victim’s parents, a case had been registered against the constable Sanyukta Kumar, resident of Hardwar and his parents under sections 306/376/506/507 of IPC in Nehru Colony police station on April 19.
Police sources said that the deceased woman constable was reported to be having a live- in-relationship with the accused constable. They were from the same police station in Dehradun. She had earlier approached Mahila Helpline wherein counseling was held. The constable had refused to marry her during the counseling.
The deceased is learnt to have pressured the senior cops to convince him to marry her. However, the senior cops’ intervention came to no avail as the accused remained adamant not to marry the woman constable he had been living with for years.
Even the warning that he would tagged under stringent sections like 376 of IPC failed to mould the accused, sources said. The accused dared his seniors to do anything while affirming that he would not marry the woman constable, sources added.
Moreover, in the written complaint, the victim’s father stated that the accused had physically exploited his daughter for a number of years, assuring her that he would marry her soon.
He had threatened her, saying she would face consequences if she refused to satisfy his lust, the father said in his complaint. However, things turned for the worse as the accused decided to marry another girl. This is what provoked the woman constable to commit suicide, police said. “We are leaving no stone unturned to arrest the accused. He is absconding now. But he would soon be nabbed,” said a senior police officer probing the case.
