The sudden weather change caused by spells of rain causing temperature fluctuations is being observed in Dehradun and other parts of the state for the past few days. According to the health experts, such sudden changes in weather can result in various illnesses, especially among children and old people.

The temperature fluctuations as being observed presently create an ideal atmosphere for viruses to proliferate that causes various viral infections and illnesses, said Dehradun based consultant physician Dr Sanjay Kumar Varun.

He said that virus generally attacks the respiratory tract in humans therefore it is important to take precautions to minimise the risk of infection. Dietician from Government Doon Medical College (GDMC) hospital Dr Richa Kukreti Dobariyal suggests several measures to remain healthy and boost immunity during the fluctuating weather. Dr Dobariyal said that in the current constantly varying temperature, the parents should make sure that children wear the clothes covering their whole body so that they do not catch cold.

The consumption of cold drinks and ice creams should also be avoided.

"Currently, one should focus on increasing the immunity of the body. Some products like warm milk with a pinch of turmeric powder, green tea, tulsi, vegetables, fruits and fibre-rich items can be used to boost immunity.

If possible, people especially children should consume more fruits with peels like orange and banana than grapes or strawberries," stated Dr Dobariyal.

According to the experts, keeping the body hydrated, maintaining a proper routine during lockdown and doing regular exercise are also some ways of keeping the body healthy in the current scenario.

Dr Varun also suggests avoiding the use of air conditioners and cooler as much as one can during the constantly changing temperature as it can cause cold or other illnesses.

He said that it is also important to maintain hygiene by washing hands regularly with soap, using sanitisers and using masks so that viruses do not reach the respiratory system and attack it.

According to the experts, considering the current novel coronavirus pandemic it is important more than ever to boost immunity, maintain hygiene and to remain healthy, particularly for old people.
