Blaze in godown destroys medicines, property worth lakhs

A fire in Kamini medical godown on Thursday morning at Chatwali Gali near Kotwali Police Station in Dehradun destroyed medicines and property worth lakhs of rupees, claimed the owner of medical godown. The Dehradun Fire Officer SP Mamgai said the fire is suspected to have been triggered by an electrical short circuit at the godown.

The owner Purushottam Uniyal, resident of Harrawala had not procured No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the department of Fire Service. Fire safety equipments were not found in the godown, he added.

Mamgai said that deployment of three fire tenders at incident site on time, helped control the fire before it could assume alarming proportions. No casualty was reported, he added.

According to him, the Fire department was informed about the fire around 3.45 am by local residents after which three fire tenders were sent to the site. “Due to narrow street, we faced difficulties in reaching the site. We somehow managed to reach the site at 4.05 am and extinguished the fire after tackling it for about an hour," said Mamgai.

He further said that houses adjacent to the godwon were not damaged by the fire. “Had the medical godown owner applied for NOC in the Fire department, he would not be allowed to establish medical godown in a residential area. The teams deployed at the incident site have been directed to report on this incident," Mamgai added.
