The board meeting of the Municipal Corporation of Dehradun is slated to be held on November 8 and this time the councillors of both the BJP and the Opposition Congress appear to be in the mood to ensure that the board meeting is held without disruption.
The previous session of the MCD board meeting had to be adjourned indefinitely when BJP councillors manhandled the Mukhya Nagar Adhikari accusing him of being apathetic towards public representatives and developmental works.
leader of Opposition in the MCD, Neenu Sehgal of the Congress said that with the municipal corporation’s board meeting not being held in the six months since the election of the new board, developmental works and other important tasks have been hampered.
“This time, the councillors of both the BJP and Congress are serious about ensuring that the board meeting is held and necessary decisions are taken. The Congress councillors had also met the Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna in the recent past seeking that the MCD also get tax on stamp duty in order to improve the financial condition of the corporation. We hope that this decision will be taken soon, apart from which various developmental works will be the main focus of the board meeting,” he stressed.
Observers point out that though some BJP councillors are still unhappy with the functioning of the MNA, the scenes witnessed in the previous board meeting are unlikely to be witnessed this time. It will be recalled that during the first board meeting of the present MCD board held last month, unruly scenes were witnessed after BJP councillors manhandled the Mukhya Nagar Adhikari (MNA) Ashok Kumar and tried to physically remove him from the meeting hall.
The Congress councillors had come to defend the MNA which resulted in heated exchanges between councillors of the rival parties. The municipal staff had also gone on strike to protest against the actions of the councillors and police complaints were lodged by the employees and councillors against each other.
However, the issue was resolved later following deliberations between the involved parties.
