The long-drawn struggle of the students of Government College, New Tehri has yielded results in the new year. The college authorities have finally installed a biometric attendance system to ensure the presence of the staff members and the teachers throughout the day. Thanks to the just-installed attendance gadget, the teachers and other employees would not find it easy to bunk duties during the working hours.
The students had been demanding the installation of such a gadget for a long time. They had even staged protests in support of their demand from time to time. The students had argued that several teachers and other employees have made it a habit to bunk duties, after marking their presence for the sake of formality. After the installation of the machine, skipping duties would prove difficult and risky too. At present, the college has 22 regular teachers, 24 contractual teachers and 24 third and fourth class employees under UPNl. Now they would have to register presence twice during the span of their working hours daily.
It is learnt that with the machine being installed, the Principal of the college would attest the attendance sheets and forward them to the higher education director daily. According to college Principal Prof Dr Ashok Kumar, the administration has introduced the new system under which the machine has been set up. “I am sure that the College would be benefitted by the system as a whole,” Ashok said. “We are happy that our protracted struggle to pressure the authority to ensure the presence of the teachers and other staff members of the college has borne fruits in the new year. We are sure this would go a long way in stopping the tendency of bunking duties on the part of the errant employees,” said a student.
