The stock of life saving drugs is fast depleting in Doon hospital due to which the hospital administration has advised doctors to subscribe these medicines only for five days to the patients.

The drug suppliers to Doon hospital, which is the biggest hospital of State, have threatened to stop supplies of the medicines due to pending payments. The hospital management confirmed that bills of about Rs2 crore are pending. The sources in Pharmacy department of the hospital revealed that antibiotics are in short supplies. It was learnt that the in house patients of the hospital require about 500 injections daily and the stock of injections is enough for only three to four days. A small consignment of injections from the health directorate is expected to arrive in the hospital on Tuesday.

The Principal Medical Superintendent (PMS) of Doon hospital, Dr R Aswal told The Pioneer that due to pending payments medicine suppliers are hesitating to send supplies. He however claimed that the hospital is having enough medicines in its buffer stock. Dr Aswal said that it had come to his notice that many patients are able to take medicines for 15 days from the medicine counters, which includes antibiotics. He said that the doctors are advised to prescribe antibiotics for five days only.

Doon hospital caters large number of patients from all parts of Garhwal division. The 380 bed hospital also attracts large number of patients from neighboring districts of Uttar Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh. The shortage in supplies of life saving drugs in this hospital could be a cause of major trouble for the patients. It is worth mentioning here that the shortage medicines is triggered by paucity of funds as the hospital administration is not able to clear payments of drug vendors.
